I walked out of my english class and I saw Melissa sulking by a set of the school's doors. She was upset about something I knew that much. I walked slowly up to her.I stared into her eyes. I couldn't believe Melissa had over heard us. I felt destroyed to see my loved one this hurt and angry. Her eyes were red and her cheeks were flushed.
"You've been crying," my voice was low.
She just stared at me. We stood there, looking at each other until a few moments later.
"Why?" she asked tears running down her cheeks again, "WHY MUST YOU DIE!"
The question burned my heart. "If I lose to this thing in my head mel... I won't be me... I won't be the one you love anymore."
Her hands were clenched into fists. "That's not a true reason Gordon..."
"Melissa, listen to reason!" I pleaded.
"No Gordon...the one I loved wouldn't back down from this... You'd fight it to keep our spark...right?"
I looked down to the ground drooping my head. "I don't know..."
With a swift movement her hand came across my face. "You must!" she yelled at me
It stung like hell. She slumped against the school's wall and began crying. I dropped to all fours and nudged her with my snout.
"I'm sorry, Melissa." I said.
She wrapped her arms around my snout and cried harder. "I don't want you to die" she kept repeating.
"I won't," I whispered in her ear. "I'll make sure of it."
She looked at me and smiled. Her smile grew as wide as she could make it and pressed herself harder against me. I sat down like a dog again and wrapped my wings around us sheltering ourselves from the outside.
"Promise me you'll be with me forever..." she sighed.
"I promise..." I whispered in her ear.
I felt a sharp pain on the membrane of my wings. I unfolded them to see Nathan looming over us with a razor sharp pencil in his hands.
"You poked that into my wing?!" I yelled amazed. "You bastard!"
"Calm down..." he said, "Just wanted to let you know you missed your bus."
I shrugged it off. I could fly home and I wanted to be with Melissa.
"What time is it?" Mel asked quickly.
"Three o'clock, why?" Nathan wondered.
"Damn it!" she yelled and began to take off to the west.
I said my good byes to Nathan and took off for home. The wind over and under my wings felt amazing, I could even sense all of the drafts and changes. It took five minutes to get to my house. ~Now...to land... ~ I thought. I let my wings take the wind drafts and floated gently to the cement below.
~What could have been on Melissa's mind?~ I wondered but soon after forgot about it.
I unlocked my door, emptied the fridge and went to bed hoping the next day would be better.
That night the voices came. I readied myself for this moment and it had finally come. In my dream I was standing in a field of roses and poppies. I was human, not shocking there. Standing in the middle was the dragon version of me, except it was twice as big and scarier.
"Sssso you have come." it said, "sssshould we get thisss over with?"
A large, black and red sword appeared by my feet. It was the sword I had come to use periodically in my stories. I knew its origin and power inside and out. "I will not kill you with this blade, dragon."
"Why?" It taunted, "I will kill you any way!"
I walked slowly up to it, the sword sheathed on my back. "Why can't true dragons and humans co-exist?"
"You have sssslaughtered our kin! And devoured our flesh!" It howled.
"I understand... but times have changed, humans have changed."
It rolled its eyes at me. "That is what they have said for the past dozen centuries and they sssstill do not understand!"
"O.K. Mr.Big shot!" I yelled in anger. "Show me that I don't understand!"
The dragon lept at me. I stood there. My knees were shaking, but I had to stay and take the blow. The full weight of the dragon came crashing down on me. It felt like I had hit a wall.
"This is the force that will destroy man kind!" it bellowed.
I couldn't mutter a word.
"Speechless little human?"
Just then a girl about our age, (14) with dark red hair and fiery red eyes walked into the field holding a blazing sword. "You're crushing my other half mongrel."
The dragon looked at the girl and slowly but making sure to hurt me, got off of my body.
"Who are you girl?"
The girl just kept on walking towards us. "Good of you to show Sair."
She just nodded. "Who is this person?" The dragon demanded.
"Me," I said calmly, "Or as people put it, my evil side."
The dragon looked at both of us. With a roar it attacked. Sair side stepped it and I grabbed onto a spike, hoisting myself onto its back.
"How about a proposition?" I gritted my teeth as it tried to shake me off.
"Fine!" it growled. "You win in a fight, I obey your ordersssss!"
"I lose you can have my body!" It finally flung me off.
Sair stood beside me. "Want me to do anything?"
I shook my head. "We're one person aren't we?"
"Then what about all of the characters you have created?" She asked.
The clearing had become pact with different forms, beings and animals. All of the creatures I had created with my friends. The dragon was cornered.
"Everyone!" I called out.
The field became quiet. "This is my fight... just my fight!"
The were mumbles of anger and jealousy."Hey!" I called out. "If I fail I need you to avenge me got it?"
Being my creations they had to obey.
"Wisssse Wordssss Human" The dragon said.
The field open up in the middle for Myself and the dragon. "What is your name evilly kind Dragon?"
"That is not important," it replied.
I just shrugged. No point in arguing with a 5 tonne dragon. I grasped the handle of my sword. Dragon scales. I always had a fascination of them. Always included something draconic in my designs. I let the sun reflect off of the dark blade. The red in the middle of the sword. Was glowing.
"That is a dragon slaying blade!" The dragon reared onto its hind legs and let out a gushing blast of fire. "How dare you!"
I readied myself. ~ Just like bull fighting!~ I said to myself nervously, ~Just like bull fighting~
My legs wouldn't move. "Damn it!" I growled. I placed the blade out in front of me to guard from the attack. The dragon came crashing down on me. The blade piercing its underbelly. I dragged it across the meaty flesh and out from under its arm. This didn't stop it though. It flew up into the air and tried to dive bomb me. I jumped out of the way but he was expecting me to do this. An arm shot out and grabbed me, lifting me into the sky.
"You ready to die?" He asked me.
"Not yet." I said.
He bit my shoulder. I heard a sickening crunch. My sword arm was totally destroyed and if I didn't do something he would rip it off. I started punching his arm, biting it, scratching, anything to get him to let go. Then I remembered how my snout hurt like a bitch when Amy hit it. I aimed at his muzzle and punched as hard as I could. His jaws opened and my limp arm slipped out. I looked at the wound. Blood kept flowing out of it. My head began to spin.
"There is no way you'll win thisssss fight." It hissed. It dropped me.
"You underestimate my mind dragon. " Black wings sprouted from my back. "This is my world, whatever I want to come to being becomes reality."
All I could do for the next few minutes was try to evade the dragons attacks. It was a useless tactic. In the end, both my arms were broken and I felt like dying. I pushed myself up from the blood soaked ground. Blood ran down my mouth. ~I promised Mel I wouldn't die...~ I said to myself.
The dragon landed. "Why are you sssstill alive human?" It questioned me.
I got to my feet weakly. No sign of life resigned in my body except for my soul. "You can't destroy what you haven't made..."
I looked at the dragon and smiled a wicked smile. "Die you son of a bitch.."
That did the trick. The dragon charged head on. My characters around me kept shouting, "Move Gordon! YOU WILL DIE!"
I stood my ground. ~ So be it~ I thought ~ If I die the dragon will die with me~
My right hand grew into massive claws. Whenever my character would start to die in my stories this would happen to kill whatever was trying to kill him. I raised it slightly.
"Thisss thing won't ssstop me" The dragon roared.
I charged. Yelling like a mad man I struck the dragon close to the heart. It reared its head in pain and fell onto its back.
"You're not dead yet.." I said anger tinging my voice.
"Sssstop young human." The dragon commanded. "The fight is over you have won."
I wanted to finish it off but I knew that I had to stop. "I order you to submit and stay in the darkest part of my mind were you will behave like a good dragon!"
It bowed its head in defeat. The crowds cheered and I collapsed.
Amy walked into my room to find me on the floor covered in sweat. "Oh shit!" she cried.
She reached for the phone and decided against it. The cops weren't going to do anything.
Amy grabbed my laptop from the shelf and opened it. For an eleven year old she can guess my passwords and hack all my accounts like it was nothing. She clicked on the Live Messenger button and signed on. Fortunately Will was on.
Will! She typed.
What is it Gordon? He replied.
It's amy and gordon's covered in sweat and he isn't looking too well!
O.K. I'll be right there just make sure he's alive
Will logged off and amy checked my pulse. Still there but irregular.
"Hopefully William can figure this one out." she said to herself as she tried to wake me up by spraying me with the cat's spray bottle.
