I stared in wonder. It had been exactly 6 months since Melissa moved. Yet there she was standing in front of me. Her hands on my muzzle. I felt the scales on my cheeks get warm. Her blue eyes full of wonder, awe and terror examined my new features. ~ She still loves me...~ I thought ready to cry. ~ Even though I'm a dragon...~ Melissa pressed her face against my hard scaly chest and closed her eyes. I leaned my head down. The smell of her beautiful golden hair brought many memories back to me. I wrapped my arms around her bringing the rest of her body against mine. There were a few awwes and "how cute" remarks, but we just ignored them. Our science teacher, Mr. P (for the sake of not releasing his full last name) rang his diner bell on his desk to get our attention.

"Order up!" Nathan shouted.

Everyone laughed. Mr. P wasn't too keen on Nathan's out burst so he left a mark on the white board meaning at the lunch bell we had to stay an extra minute. We didn't care, this was Nathan's joke and we ended up not having to stay anyways. A few of the kids in our class stayed as far away from me as possible but Nath, Mel, Will, Mati and a handful of others crowded around the lab desk I sat at.


Mr. P was generous enough to let everyone talk and fool around the whole period since we had a new student and a dragon in the class. So I ended up being bombarded with questions. "Have you used your wings before?", "How long have you been a dragon?", "Was it painful transforming?", "I want to be a dragon! How do I become one?"

Nathan and Will had to keep the horde from overwhelming me. By 11:15 my head hurt. The bell rang and I made my escape. I dashed down the hall and outside into the snowy field. I had to get away and think, but all around the school is open field, or forest. ~Forest is too thick for me to walk in.~ I thought,~ but the school's roof is secluded...~ I spread my wings, open, closed, open, closed.

"Screw thinking!" I yelled, "I wanna fly!"

Kids stared at me like I was crazy and about to go on a killing spree.  I ran down a wide path between the portable and school and leaped with all my might. Wings spread wide, I flapped like crazy. Gathering the strength I needed I was able to keep aloft drifting slowly around the football field. Will was there with Nathan.

"Oh come on Nathan! A Novalith Warhead will go straight through a star destroyer!" Will objected.

"What if I had a gravity well nearby?" Nathan jeered back.

I laughed. Nathan and Will were talking nerd again. "Well it would slow down enough for you to destroy but it will still blow up destroying both the gravity well and the star destroyer. While the cannon remains intact back at my planet." I heard Will protest Nathan's response.

I let out a loud roar startling them both. "Shut up both of you!" I roared, "You two are like children!"

They just laughed at me. I folded in my wings and plummeted to the ground, unfolding them at the last second to slow my descent. Though, I was to late and crashed into the ground face first. This got them rioting with laughter.

"First time flying?" Will asked looking at my tangled body.

"Yea..." I muttered.

"You know if you defeat that dragon in your head you'll have to learn everything from scratch." He pointed out.

I shuttered at the thought. What all the other dragons had to endure. The voice in your head telling you of great power... just...lose your human side forever. Looking at my life, I wanted to keep it. The girl I  loved is accepting of my new form, so are my friends. Right now all I wanted to deal with was my parents.

"You're right Will..." I said calmly after regaining my footing. "I will have to face it... but I won't fight it! I won't!"

"Then what will you do?" he asked.

"Try to make a pact with it...try to befriend it..." I said.

"and if that doesn't work out?What is plan B?"

"I'll fight it," I said sternly, " But you got to promise, that if I don't survive it you have to kill me."

Will took the full blow of my words with pain but nodded.

"Thanks, " I said in a hushed voice.

We were at the edge of the forest and I heard a branch break. My head jerked up to see Melissa standing there. She had over heard the whole thing.
